Fixer Upper-Office Edition

I’ve talked about our fixer upper here and there on Instagram but I’ve never actually shown you the inside of our home! AND what our home looked like when we bought it 3 years ago. This is the first of many posts about our own fixer upper. I recently renovated my office and wanted to share it with all of you!

If you’re a snoopy curious person like myself, then you will agree with me when I say that touring other homes is fun! Every home is so different and unique and I love to see all of the character each home has to offer. Kyle once did a market on a home with an underground shooting range! How insane is that?!

Here is a little background about how we stumbled across our Fixer Upper. Kyle’s parents live next-door and for years Kyle and I sat outside on his parents back patio and starred up at this house next to them, always brainstorming and dreaming of what we could do with all of that potential. We were able to see underneath the terrible paint job and out of control juniper bushes. The weeds were over our heads and the entire half acre looked like a jungle. The house itself was darling but it needed work. And by work, I mean a total and complete gut job.

After a couple years of seriously considering this, and going back and forth between the renters and owners, we closed on the house in July of 2014. I was 16 weeks pregnant with Clara! Below is one of my favorite pictures from the renovation. My sister Jodi (who was also pregnant) came over to demo the house with me one afternoon. In fact, both of our families helped us rip apart this home and put it back together.

I can’t wait to show you where we started with this house and how far we’ve come in 3 years. But we’ll take it slow and start with the office first. I’ve posted a few “before” pictures below.

When you reach the top of the stairs on the second floor, there’s a little den area behind the landing. This is what it looked like when the renters still lived here. All of the walls were covered in wood paneling. Brown shag carpet. Baseboard heat. Single paned windows. Despite all of the windows and natural light, it just seemed like a dark cave.

We replaced the carpet, replaced the windows, removed the paneling, removed the baseboard heating, added new texture along the walls and ceiling, painted, added all new trim and doors, and eventually replaced all of the light fixtures. We did some work ourselves and hired out the rest.

The den was sort of a “catch all” space. We never used it. It basically became a room for extra diapers and random baby toys. Before purchasing my desktop computer I worked on my laptop downstairs so I didn’t feel the need for an office. Last spring, I bit the bullet and invested in a desktop computer. My laptop was over 10 years old and needed to be put to rest. That’s when I decided to make that den area a little office.

Just recently I gave my little office a makeover! I’m so pleased with how it turned out. I still have some walls to fill but my main office area is done! Here is the before picture one more time…

And here is what that space looks like now…

And after…

Full tutorial for the desk and shelves coming soon! Thanks to the Shanty Sisters for the inspiration and free plans! I I wanted this space to feel cozy and inviting. I love how the soft pink and gold give it a feminine touch while the wooden furniture creates some warmer tone and texture. I purchased the decor from Hobby Lobby, Home Goods and Target. The chair came from Pier One. I couldn’t be more pleased with this wall in my office. It makes paying bills a little more enjoyable.

I would like to add a seating area directly behind my desk on the opposite wall. It would also be nice to have some sort of sideboard that I can use to store all the little knick knacks that I don’t want cluttering up my desk. But for now, I’m at peace with how this room came out. All the details about the decor used to decorate my office can be found below!
